Product Management in the Era of AI: Challenges and Opportunities

3 min readJun 13, 2023

AI is no longer the stuff of sci-fi movies or a distant dot on the horizon. It’s here, infiltrating everything from your morning coffee run — “Alexa, order my usual from Starbucks” — to late-night binge-watching — “Netflix, stop suggesting Tiger King, we’ve been over this.” But how is it reshaping the venerable field of product management? Let’s dive in.

First, it’s worth addressing the AI-shaped elephant in the room: will AI replace product managers? The short answer is “no.” However, like a determined robot vacuum, AI is significantly altering the landscape of product management, sucking up mundane tasks and leaving PMs free to navigate more complex challenges. It’s less Skynet, more ‘helpful R2-D2.’

In reality, AI empowers PMs with data-driven insights, predicting user behaviour, and customizing user experience at a scale humanly impossible. Netflix’s recommendation system, for instance, is a stellar example. It doesn’t just make great show suggestions (minus the occasional Tiger King faux pas); it represents how AI can analyze mammoth amounts of data to personalize user experience, and this isn’t just pulling rabbits out of a hat, it’s a whole magic show.

The transition to AI-oriented product management brings fresh challenges to the table. Remember when Dorothy told Toto, “we’re not in Kansas anymore?” Well, we’re not in the ‘just-know-your-product’ Kansas anymore. Today’s PMs need to understand how to leverage AI for strategic decision-making.

This means PMs must grasp, at least conceptually, the mechanisms behind AI. It’s like a modern version of The Sword in the Stone, except the sword is AI and the stone is your product’s success. Only those worthy (or rather, knowledgeable) can draw the sword.

Take the example of Stitch Fix, an online personal styling service. Stitch Fix uses AI and expert stylists to curate personalized outfits for users. Their PMs, while not necessarily programmers themselves, needed to understand the potential and limitations of AI, effectively “drawing the sword” to incorporate it into their service.

So, we’ve established AI is your new teammate, but how can you make this relationship work? What’s the secret sauce, or in this case, the secret source code?

Well, the answer lies in two things: collaboration and upskilling. PMs need to work hand-in-glove with data scientists, understanding the lingo, asking the right questions, and making decisions based on the data. Moreover, PMs should embrace continuous learning, mastering new tools and approaches to lead in the AI age effectively.

The rise of AI also brings unprecedented opportunities. It’s like stepping into a candy store of possibilities. AI can automate repetitive tasks, give comprehensive user insights, and optimize product performance.

Consider Grammarly, an AI-based writing assistant. The product wouldn’t exist without AI. But PMs played a crucial role in shaping this AI-driven product, understanding users’ pain points with grammar and spelling, then using AI to offer real-time suggestions.

In essence, the fusion of AI and product management is the “butter” to the bread of modern technology products. It’s like a cosmic dance between human creativity and machine efficiency. When done right, it can lead to truly revolutionary products, from autonomous vehicles to personalized learning platforms.

Yes, AI is here, and it’s changing the game, but remember, it’s just a tool. Like a very fancy, sometimes mind-boggling tool. It’s the product manager’s understanding, creativity, and strategic thinking that will wield this tool to build outstanding products.

So, buckle up, PMs of the world! Embrace AI and remember: you are the Luke Skywalker, and AI is your lightsaber. May the force (of AI) be with you!

And for those still not convinced, let me tell you, in the immortal words of Bob Dylan, “The times, they are a-changin’.” So let’s change with them and embrace the exciting opportunities this new era of AI-enabled product management presents.
